Frequently Asked Questions

  • Palliative medicine is a medical specialty, similar to cardiology or orthopedics, that focuses on caring for people with serious illness. It is designed to improve quality of life by managing symptoms, supporting complex medical decisions, and aligning care with a patient’s goals.  Palliative care can be provided alongside other treatments at any stage of illness and is delivered by a specialized team trained in serious illness care.

  • Hospice care is both a medical benefit and a philosophy of care designed for individuals who are nearing the end of life, typically with a life expectancy of six months or less. It focuses on comfort, dignity, and quality of life rather than curative treatment.  While palliative care can be provided at any stage of a serious illness, hospice care is specifically for those who are no longer seeking curative care and want support centered on comfort and end-of-life needs.

  • Palliative medicine focuses on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness. It is provided by a specially trained team of doctors and advanced practice providers who work together with your other doctors to provide an extra layer of support. • Relieve your symptoms and distress

    • Help you better understand your disease and diagnosis

    • Help clarify your treatment goals and options

    • Understand and support your ability to cope with your illness

    • Assist you with making medical decisions

    • Coordinate with your other doctors

  • Advance care planning is the process of discussing and documenting future healthcare preferences. It ensures that patients receive the kind of care they want — especially during times when they may not be able to speak for themselves.

  • Palliative care is available in a number of places. More and more, palliative care is available outside of the hospital in the places where you live. You, your doctor and the palliative care team can discuss outpatient palliative care or palliative care at home. Some hospitals also offer outpatient palliative care even if you have not been in the hospital.
